Meet Anthony

Councilmember Anthony Amos is seeking reelection after an exciting and effective first-term on City Council. He currently co-leads the Move Fairfax Steering Committee, focused on addressing traffic circulation in Old Town and pedestrian safety across the city. In addition to this, he represents the city on the Water and Air Quality committees with the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and the Virginia Municipal League.

Anthony was born into the military lifestyle. His father served in the Army for 23 years and his mom immigrated from Eritrea to Germany where his parents met. Having moved around, Anthony spent his formative years in Germany, Missouri, and Hawaii. Learning from and engaging with culturally diverse communities around the world, he took on a keen interest in public service and volunteerism. In Hawaii, he met his wife, Marena, and they have since purchased their first home together in the City of Fairfax.

Anthony received his Bachelor’s in Sociology and Political Science from the University of Hawaii – West Oahu, researching recidivism rates for indigenous groups and food insecurity on the island. During this time, he published poetry, joined his local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People as a university liaison, organized a volunteer organization with service projects to benefit groups like the houseless community, and maintained his scholarly career by consistently making the Dean’s list each semester. He continued this passion to George Mason University where he earned his Master’s Degree in Public Policy this past May (and a Certificate in Transnational Organized Crime and Illicit Trade) – being inducted into multiple honor societies for his academic performance and dedication to the community. During this time, he represented the Schar School of Policy and Government as a Graduate Student Ambassador and served as the Director of Student Outreach for Bridge at Mason, an affiliate of BridgeUSA.

This trend of service is clear from his time here in Fairfax. He immediately became engaged by joining the Central Fairfax Chamber of Commerce. Anthony held two leadership roles – Government Affairs Committee Chair and as the Philanthropy Chair for the Young Professionals Leadership team, where he played a critical role in crafting the Chamber’s policy positions on a variety of issues, to include affordable housing, human trafficking, and transportation. He also worked to start a program that honored law enforcement and first responders. Starting as a donation drive, this event is now the Central Fairfax Chamber’s “Fairfax’s Finest Valor Awards” event that takes place in October on National First Responders’ Day. In addition to this, in the City of Fairfax, he sat on the Independence Day Celebration Committee and was appointed by City Council to the George Mason University Fairfax Campus Advisory Board. He now sits on the leadership team for the Fairfax NAACP, State Charitable Gaming Board, Fairfax Rotarians, and volunteers in numerous other positions and events with groups like League of Women Voters and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Anthony has received the following accolades:
